# PeekOCR > PeekOCR is a free and open source macOS menu bar app for OCR, screenshots, annotations, GIF clips and short video captures, all one keystroke away. It runs on Apple Silicon Macs with macOS 15 or later, and text recognition happens on device with Apple Vision. ## Key facts - Native macOS menu bar app (no Dock icon) built with Swift and SwiftUI. Apple Silicon only (M1 or newer), macOS 15 Sequoia or later. Free and open source under the MIT license. - Four capture modes with default shortcuts: Capture Text (Shift+Space), Screenshot (Shift+Command+4), Annotated Screenshot (Shift+Command+5), Record Clip (Shift+Command+6). Every shortcut can be changed; Shift+Command+5 and 6 may be reserved by macOS. - OCR with Apple Vision in accurate mode, language correction and automatic language detection for English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese and Italian. QR codes are detected and their contents copied. - Screenshots copy to the clipboard and/or save as PNG, JPG, TIFF or HEIC to Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures or a custom folder, scaled from 10 to 100%. - Annotated screenshots freeze the screen: Select, Arrow, Text, Highlighter and Pen on the A, S, D, F, G keys, eight colors, undo and redo, Enter to capture. - Clips record at 15, 30 or 60 FPS with optional system audio and cursor, limited to 10 seconds by default (3 to 60 seconds, or no limit). The editor trims on a filmstrip timeline, steps frame by frame, saves single frames and exports GIF (Low, AI Debug, High) or MP4 (720p to 4K, H.264 or HEVC). Exported clips go to the clipboard and the capture preview. - Capture preview stack at the bottom left; captures taken within 15 seconds form a group that pastes together with Command+V. - Menu bar panel with the last six captures, Settings and About. Captures start from the shortcuts. - Permissions: Screen Recording and Accessibility (for global shortcuts). No account, analytics or telemetry.
